A baby monitor was one baby product that didn’t take a lot of research, I had heard of the Angelcare Monitor with the movement sensor pad and so all I had to do was check other people were happy with their purchase. After reading a few reviews it seemed that this was a must have product and would definitely go on my top 10 baby products list. It’s more than just a listening device with it’s extra sensor pad and temperature alerts it means you have complete peace of mind when your baby is sleeping (hopefully as much as possible) and you want to too.
Angelcare Monitor Sensor Pad
Even if you have a cot with a slatted base, you can get a thin piece of plywood to line the bottom of your cot to make sure it works correctly – somewhere like B&Q will cut it to size for you free of charge.
We used our Angelcare Monitor with a crib that already had a flat base and it worked perfectly monitoring all of Beth’s movements, even the lightest breath. You can adjust the sensitivity settings if you find it is going off when it shouldn’t, but this only took a couple of attempts and it was perfect. If no movement has been detected for 20 seconds the alarm sounds.
I found this feature so reassuring, it meant that when Beth slept I could too – rather than sitting up watching her and checking her breathing every other minute. This definitely gave me complete peace of mind.
The lead that runs from the sensor pad to the nursery unit is pretty long so that you can have the nursery listening unit a safe distance away from the crib.
Choice of Sound/Movement/Ticking
We only ever used the movement and sound monitoring, so we could hear her if she started to cry and the movement sensor pad baby monitor would go off if no movement was detected for 20 seconds (or when I forgot to turn it off when I took her out of her crib!).
You can also have a ticking noise that indicates that the sensor pad is detecting movement. It’s very rhythmic so I think once you get used to it you wouldn’t notice it too much, but we never used this feature.
Once you get the hang of it the menus are easy to navigate but at first it can be a little confusing to set up, the instructions can be downloaded from here if you no longer have them and offer a step by step set up guide.
Clear Sound Transmission and Security
Many people warned me that I may no longer be able to use wifi once I had a baby monitor set up. I had no issues whatsoever using the Angelcare Monitor with our wifi and the sound was always crisp and clear. It is also good to know that it a secure channel so no one can listen on to you singing lullabies to your little one. The Angelcare monitor has 8 channels and 2 frequencies, which minimises interference.
Angelcare Parent Unit
The portable rechargeable unit can either run from batteries or be plugged in to the charger if the low battery alert sounds, which also has a volume control.
Another excellent feature is the temperature monitor, most baby monitors will show you the temperature but not all have an alarm feature. Again, you can set the upper and lower temperature settings and the alarm will go off if either of these are reached – this was really handy having a new born in the middle of the winter and snow. You do need to experiment with the temperatures though depending on where your baby monitor is placed in the room.
The Angelcare monitor has a very cute design with a little pair or wings and a halo effect ring above it that lights up as a night light. The night light provides a really nice gentle glow, which is really handy when you’re doing night time feeds and changes as you can just about do it all without turning on a side light and waking your baby up further.
Another reassuring feature is that the nursery unit also has batteries so if there is a power failure in the night it will convert to using the batteries instead until power is back.
With the Angelcare monitor it was tricky to find any downsides, the only additional feature that may be useful would be a 2-way talk back for when your little one goes in to their own nursery and at first it can take a bit of trial and error to get the sensitivity settings set up correctly, but these are both very minor issues compared to the overall peace of mind it gives you as a new parent.
