Before Beth was born I purchased a standard bumper … it was just another item on my list! The bumper was never used, it just stayed wrapped up under her cot as after a few web searches and talking to people I knew I decided it wasn’t something we would be using due to potential safety issues with over heating people had highlighted.
I was recently contacted by Breathable Baby to review their breathable cot bumper and knowing a very good friend of mine had a 3 month old baby and wasn’t using a traditional bumper for the same reasons I didn’t, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to test it.
Cot Bumper Safety: Breathable Cot Bumper
On first inspection this looked like a very safe bumper, the main thing that hits you is that it is breathable and easy to breathe through it … both myself and my friend tried this out – thankfully neither of us thought to take a picture!!
Unlike other cot bumpers I’ve seen, this one attaches to the cot bars using velcro at each end of the bumper along the top and bottom edge of the bumper – the velcro is on the outside of the cot so it’s not something your little one can get to and remove easily!
It was tricky to do the next test with a 3 month old baby, but we managed to test whether a little one could use it to stand on and escape their cot. Each time we tried the bumper just crumpled … success!
I also love the fact that because the bumper is breathable you can just about see through it too – I thought this would be particularly great when they are very small, I know that’s one thing I liked about having Beth in a crib rather than a moses basket because I could see her and she could see me too.
Breathable Baby have a great video that demonstrates their product and the benefits of using it too:
4 Sided Cot Bumper
All you hear when your baby is first born is feet to foot, but with a lot of bumpers this means that the bumper is actually nowhere near the baby until they have grown quite a bit! The breathable cot bumper can cover all 4 sides of the cot making it an all round cot bumper, so no matter where the baby is in the cot the bumper is there.
This bumper is also brilliant as they start to get older and feet to foot goes out of the window as they explore the entire area of their cot in their sleep. I know Beth was forever getting her feet, legs, arms, etc. caught in the bars of her cot. Recently I saw a forum post about a little one that had rolled on to her front, tangled her legs in the bars and then couldn’t roll back – apart from the distress this little one was in because she was stuck, it just makes you think of the safety aspects of this too!
Apart from getting her limbs trapped in the bars of her cot, Beth was always rolling over and banging her head or arms on her cot … how she actually stayed asleep some nights was a miracle. Although this bumper isn’t a hugely padded bumper it is more padded than it looks in the pictures and I think it would at least soften the bumps a little bit.
Fits Different Cot Types
My friend has a cot that has solid ends, but that doesn’t matter as these bumpers can be used on both fully slatted and solid end cots as well as the lovely Stokke oval cots. There are a range of videos available showing you how to install the bumpers depending on the cot you have.

Cot Bumper Designs
Some bumpers are very plain, however, there is a nice range of cot bumper colours available to choose from to match with your baby’s nursery scheme as well as the floral daisy and safari fun bumper designs.
Other Products: Baby Blanket
As well as the breathable bumper, I received a breathable baby blanket to review. It’s a great size for sleeping, the pushchair or car seat and helps to prevent overheating and removes moisture 10 times better than traditional blankets. The baby blanket it very light weight and very soft with just a little bit of detail in one corner so again it can easily fit in with other items you may already have – it comes in blue, ecru or pink.
Breathable Baby also do a range of sleep sacs that they call Breathable Sack Wearable Blanket Sleepsuits
