Reading a story at bedtime has always been a special time of the day for Beth and I, other than being a great time for a good chat we also love a good story. Now Beth is at school she has her own reading to do too but we still love to read a story together too.
When Scholastic Book Club approached Mummy Rated to review their books we were super delighted – Beth adores the Faraway Tree series by Enid Blyton and so as we’re now reading them again from scratch and I remember reading the adventures of the Famous Five I was really pleased to have the opportunity to review two Enid Blyton books as well as a few others … we felt truly spoiled!
Scholastic Books Online
Previously I had only really heard of the Scholastic Book Club when they have visited Beth’s school so I wasn’t really aware that we could purchase on their website any time, which would still also benefit your child’s school.
The website is really easy to use and I like that if you’re not looking for anything specific you can browse books that may interest your child based on their age, interests, occasion and even the seasons. There is also a book wizard in the children’s section if they would like a few recommendations based on their interests, we did a quick test based on what Beth liked and it came up with a pretty good range of books that I would say she would have liked (or indeed does like as they are part of her own ever growing library).
Books on Sale
The books we reviewed are also included in the Scholastic book sale so a great opportunity to get a great book at an even better price than usual. I thought in general that the prices of the books were very good so in the sale they would be a bargain!!
Famous Five: Good Old Timmy
This is a colour reader short story Enid Blyton book and is very different from my old favourites I read as a child, but I love it. The illustrations are bright, bold and very modern, as I read through this with Beth I could imagine how they could easily jump out of the book and come to life they are so full of energy.
Beth is happy to read books without pictures but I think this would be a great transition book for children who would like a bit more of a story but are still keen to have pictures to break up the text and the chapters are short.

The Adventures of The Wishing Chair
The second Enid Blyton book in our review doesn’t have pictures on every page like the Good Old Timmy book, but rather little snippets of illustrations on occasional pages. This book is beautifully presented as a large hardback with sleeve and colour illustrations. In true Enid Blyton style it takes children on a magical adventure and Beth could have sat all day listening to chapter after chapter of this book and is the kind of book you just love to cherish.
When we finished the last book in the series of The Faraway Tree Beth didn’t want to read the last chapter as it meant they were over and she didn’t want the story to end … reading the wishing chair spurred her on and she decided actually she did want to read the final chapter and then start all over again.

How To Draw Batman, Superman and Other Super Heroes
Who doesn’t love a super hero and Beth is no exception with her collection of Bat Woman and Spider Girl capes hanging along side Elsa and Cinderella dresses I knew Beth would connect with this book as she is always drawing.
This book is great as not only do you have information about your favourite Super Heroes (baddies!) it is simple in it’s approach to teaching children how to draw and can be easily transferred to drawing regular people … who are perhaps super heroes in their spare time!
The age suitability on this book is 7-9 years old, which I would think is probably about right although it is still a book that Beth (now 6!) is really enjoying because she enjoys drawing so much.

Christmas Sticker Activity Book
The last book in our review is a fun packed Christmas Activity Book. We received our books in December so this was perfect timing to channel some of the excitement that Beth had building up by decorating Santa’s sleigh with presents. This activity book is full of activities with stickers organised by pages as well spot the difference, hide and seek type activities, etc.
Really nicely laid out and organised this was great to keep Beth very busy and held her attention really well.
I would definitely recommend being super organised and buying this in the sale in preparation for next year: Christmas Sticker Activity Book
RRP: £4.99 – Sale price: 99p!!!
I will definitely be visiting the Scholastic website again (especially while they have a sale on!) as they have a great range of books at brilliant prices and the idea that your Child’s school also benefits adds an additional reason to buy from them!
