With having twins, naturally everything is double… nappies by the shed load, laundry by the truck load and outings-paraphernalia needing a separate vehicle. Therefore any baby related equipment that so much as hints at making life easier/simpler/less stressful is certainly worth a try! But hang on, this is a baby bottle. We are used to being bombarded by variations on teat designs that promise less colic and by association more sleep for all, but this bottle claims to be the “new generation”.
Can a reinvention of the wheel be applied to baby bottles?
What first struck me when I saw the Twistshake bottles was the design and range of colours. They certainly stand out and they caught my attention. The shape of the bottle is appealing in its sleek and simple shaping, however this is not just aesthetically pleasing but functional too, for the wide top makes for easier cleaning and prompts one to ask why this is not a common feature on all bottles. No more struggling with additional bottle brushes (an ordinary one will do), you can fit a dishcloth in to dry it, and better still it gives the sleep deprived mum a larger goal to aim at when spooning in formula.
Double points in the cleaning and less mess category!
The next thing I notice on the Twistshake bottle is the little lidded container that is neatly tucked inside the bottle. This is for storage of either formula or snack food when out and about. Less outings-paraphernalia – hooray! And this is a neat solution to the issue of making up formula bottles on the move. In order to minimise container overload I have previously relied on putting formula in to the bottle, to then later add water. This can require quite a vigorous shake in order for all the formula at the bottom of the bottle to mix in properly. This idea eliminates both issues as you simple turn out your inner container then pour in your water followed by the formula. And at the pouring stage another functional design choice becomes apparent.
The measurement scale on the bottle is very clear and bold. This may seem like a minor note but I refer you to the photo of the NUK bottle I have used for over 2 years you can clearly see the difference! Night time feeds were always a struggle to accurately measure water levels without a torch or magnifying glass!
Shake It Up!
So then comes the shake and this is where I believe this bottle earns its “new generation” status. We are all used to the routine of pinching the bottle teat (which for newborns can obviously cause contamination) and we are also accustomed to the odd showering of milk through the air hole when we don’t get the angle or pinching just right. We are also familiar with the frustration after some feedings when we find clumps of formula at the bottom of the bottle that didn’t quite make the mix. Well, this bottle answers all three of those dilemmas. Due to the precise shape of the teat and the fit of the lid, you can shake this bottle vigorously and the lid does not fill up with milk. No teat piching required. It’s patent pending “super mixer” inside the bottle also helps disperse the formula, making for quicker and clump-free bottles.
So here comes the real test – what do my girls think of the bottle? When I showed each of them, they said “oooh purple” in a chorus of approval. They are of the age where they only have milk at night now but equally the age where they would certainly voice their disapproval of a bottle change after having only NUK since birth. Nope, nothing. They happily drink their milk and I happily sink back in to bed after a very straightforward formula mix at 1am.
In conclusion, I am very happy these bottles came my way and I wish they had done so sooner! The designers have certainly thought out of the box and honed in on preparation issues that we actually all took for granted. My girls may be nearing the age when a night time formula bottle is a thing of the past but with this particular bottle it lives on as a tall cup! Money well spent. I hope to see these bottles on supermarket shelves and I would certainly recommend.
